It's a fake. What seems to be a period colonial house, is neither an original, restoration, nor reconstruction but an imitation, built in 1957 by then Mayor Richardson Dilworth. In an effort to promote gentrification in the Washington Square neighborhood, the Mayor bought two handsome 19th-century townhouses, which had fine balconies extending across their width. Unfortunately, the buildings were too ramshackle to be refurbished. The Mayor hired architect G. Edwin Brumbaugh to build this home. A drill team, the Philadelphia County Dental Society, currently owns the building.” (Source: The IHA Independence Hall Association) |
